20% of the page views at FT.com come from mobile devices
"The Financial Times has registered another digital milestone with the FT Web App seeing over one million users since its launch in June.
Available on the iPhone and iPad by visiting app.ft.com directly from the device’s web browser, almost half of its users have downloaded a shortcut to their iPad or iPhone home screen, replicating a native app experience.
The launch of the FT Web App has significantly boosted mobile and tablet traffic. FT.com now sees 20% of total page views and 15% of new B2C subscriptions each week coming directly from mobile and tablet devices. These readers are also more engaged, with FT.com users who register on mobiles and tablets 2.5 times more likely to subscribe, as well as being more active in giving feedback."

90% of the money spent on apps is spent on iOS apps
"Apple devices still hammering the rest when it comes to real spending by punters.
Analyst Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray made his projection earlier this week, and also said that he believes Android Market has generated a miserly seven per cent of the amount Apple's App Store has grossed in its lifetime.
He also claims that about $330 million has been generated on the Android Market, and that only 1.3 per cent of the apps on it are paid.
Munster doesn't see Android making up too much ground in revenues despite the gains its making in overall usage."

Tablet High On Felt!
The HiLo is quite an interesting concept; it is a 10” OLED Tablet with a wireless felt keyboard. Now the thing about the keyboard is that it’s styled as a jacket to hold the tablet. At the same time it features fused (hot pressed – embedded circuitry) keys on the outside. Naturally, you use the keyboard as desired, however I’m getting a kick out of the casual interaction between the protective jacket and the tablet. It’s just too awesome!

Sting's iPad app cost over $1m to produce
"Earlier this week, we reported on the launch of Sting 25, an iPad app celebrating Sting’s solo career. But how much did it cost to make? More than one million dollars. This is according to the Wall Street Journal.
“Having recently released a 25th anniversary Sting box set, the singer’s label, Universal Music Group, and publisher, EMI, say they eagerly supported the app as a high-tech showcase for Sting’s catalog,” explains the newspaper.
“The music companies offered up the copyright clearances required, but didn’t chip in on the production budget. Those costs, in the low seven figures, were primarily covered by sponsors American Express and Chevrolet.”"

More tablets were shipped than netbooks in Q2 2011
"Media tablet shipments surpassed netbook shipments this quarter, reaching 13.6 million units, compared to just 7.3 million netbooks. Netbooks had previously led the way with 8.4 million shipments in 1Q11, compared to just 6.4 million media tablets.
“This is a trend that we do not expect will reverse,” says Jeff Orr, group director, mobile devices. “As they are different segments, this is not a direct replacement behavior, but a changing of leadership for the most interesting device type.”
Driving media tablet interest is Apple’s iPad 2. 68% of the media tablet shipments in 2Q11 consisted of Apple iPad models. Consumers are choosing tablets over netbooks for a number of reasons. “Media tablets are perceived to be easy to use, compared to the keyboard and mouse interface of a netbook computer. Those who have avoided PCs because they are difficult to use – think the Baby Boomer generation and older – see media tablets as an opportunity to re-engage with Internet access. Cost, however, is certainly not a reason driving tablet interest, as the average media tablet costs approximately $600 and the average netbook is only about half of that,” says Orr."

Advertising is more effective if seen on multiple platforms
"In the group that was exposed to TV ads alone, 50 percent of people correctly attributed the ad to the correct auto brand. For groups that saw the ad across all screens – TV, computer, smartphone and tablet – the ability to remember the brand jumped dramatically to nearly three-in-four (74%).
Similarly, only 22 percent of the group exposed to just the TV ad was able to correctly remember that the ad was for a 4-door sedan versus 39 percent of the group that saw the ad across all screens."

Tablet users in the US spend more time online than other internet users
"If early adopter metrics are a fair indication, then the tablet is poised to be a genuine game changer in both the ways in which people access the Web and the sheer volume of their use.
According to research from Knowledge Networks, tablet-owning consumers on average spend 48% more time each day with the Internet -- 4 hours and 19 minutes across platforms compared to 2 hours and 55 minutes for all users.
Knowledge Networks extracted the data from their MultiMedia Mentor database of metrics charting media usage across eight media for adults ages 18 to 64.
Owners of tablets spend just under an hour a day (55 minutes) with the Internet on these devices. The other major tablet uses -- social networking, search and gaming -- each account for about 15% or 8 minutes each of tablet time."

"The number of mobile broadband-enabled tablets (e.g., Apple iPad, Motorola Xoom, BlackBerry PlayBook, HP TouchPad, etc.) sold in the second quarter versus the first quarter jumped 80%, with 14 million tablets sold worldwide in 2Q11
A total of US$31.4 billion was spent on smartphones in 2Q11, down 1.4% from the previous quarter despite unit shipments being up about 2%, indicating unit-price erosion impeded revenue growth
Infonetics expects global smartphone revenue to grow 31% in 2011 over 2010, to $117 billion
Apple's stronger volumes and higher ARPU helped increase its global smartphone revenue share every quarter thus far in 2011, now at 36% of the smartphone market in 2Q11

Flipboard has been downloaded 3.5m times
"He revealed that the app has hit 3.5 million downloads in a year and two months, and has gone from 250 million flips per month to 550 million flips per month in the four months since June. Last time we checked in the app had seen over 2.5 million downloads and with 11.4 million “Flips” per day (which can be likened to pageviews).
The 3.5 million figure is impressive considering Apple has said that it will have sold a total of 35 million iPads in 18 months."

The iPad has an estimated 73% share of the UK tablet market
"A total of 3.62 million people own tablet computers in the UK, with Apple having a 73% market share, according to new research from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
The number of owners is set to grow rapidly, although Apple's share may be eroded, with only half of potential tablet owners saying that they will buy an iPad in the next year, says the company. Kantar gathers its data from a panel of direct consumer interviews in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, US and Australia.
The second most-popular tablet brand among owners is the Samsung Galaxy. Among would-be buyers, 6% plan to buy one. However, after that the brand split is "a long tail" with some brands having only one or two percentage point shares.
The market is still up for grabs, with 28% of those who intend to buy a tablet over the next year unsure about which brand to buy, the research found."

Two thirds of US Tablet owners have used the device to watch full-length movies
"A recent study of over 1,400 U.S. consumers conducted by Boston-based custom research firm, Chadwick Martin Bailey found that smartphones and tablets are not only more popular than ever, they are replacing relatively new technology like portable gaming systems as well as devices that have long resisted substitution like TVs and laptops.
The increase in quality and capabilities of mobile devices has sparked major changes in consumer habits. For example: over half of smartphone and tablet users play games on their device and two-thirds of these people are using other devices less for gaming (particularly portable gaming systems). Additionally, nearly two-thirds of tablet owners have used these devices to watch feature-length movies. As tablets become more mainstream, the data indicate that stand-alone DVD players will go the way of the horse and buggy.
“The increasing ubiquity and capabilities of smartphones, tablets and the mobile networks that support them is having enormous implications for the entertainment and consumer electronics industries,” says Chris Neal, Vice President of Chadwick Martin Bailey’s Tech and Telecom Practice. “Content owners and advertisers of all stripes stand to benefit, while many specialty device manufacturers will need to course correct if they haven’t already.”"
